6 tips for sun and summer safety

summer sun staying safe in summerSummer and fun go hand in hand. During the warm summer months, we spend more time outside, enjoying the nice weather. However, there are some summer hazards that you should either prepare for or avoid altogether.

Here are 6 tips to help you and your family stay safe and enjoy the fun this summer:

Slather on the sunscreen
We all know by now that too much sun can lead to skin cancer. So, when it comes to sunscreen, more is better. You should apply it early – at least 20 to 30 minutes before you go out in the sun. And, reapply it often. You should reapply it every two hours or after you’ve been in water.

Most people also apply too little sunscreen. You should slather on a thick layer or film to all areas that will be exposed to the sun. Some common areas that can be missed include the tops of feet, backs of knees, hands, ears and scalp. And, be sure to ask someone to help you get the hard to reach places, like the middle of your back.

Wrap your sunglasses
While I like a stylish pair of shades as much as the next person, I also want to protect my eyes. Doctors recommend wearing sunglasses that wrap around your temples. This keeps the UV rays out. Your sunglasses should block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Check the label when buying new sunglasses to make sure they meet UV standards. You can also add a wide-brimmed hat for even more sun protection.

Keep hydrated and cool
It’s important to keep drinking water or sports drinks when spending time outdoors. It’s easy to become dehydrated without realizing it. It’s also easy to become too hot and experience heat stroke or heat exhaustion. The best prevention is to stay hydrated and make sure you take breaks from the sun or vigorous exercise to cool down. You should also wear loose fitting clothing and avoid getting a sunburn, which limits your ability to cool off.

Listen to your head
A headache or migraine can be a warning sign of a more serious problem, including dehydration, allergies, becoming overheated or sun poisoning. In addition, hot and humid weather as well as thunderstorms can trigger migraines. Even going in and out of air conditioning can cause a headache because of the fluctuation in temperatures. Paying attention to your head can help you prevent migraines and other conditions.

Watch your step
It is very tempting to walk around barefooted in the summer. However, you can easily get splinters, step on sharp objects or burn your feet on asphalt or sand. Even wearing flip-flops or sandals can make you more prone to tripping or twisting an ankle. Shoes without much support can also contribute to foot, ankle and back pain.

Stay safe in the yard
Summer means mowing the yard and maintaining your landscaping. Watch out for flying debris from lawn mowers and weed eaters. You also need to be careful with chainsaws and pruning shears. Wear gloves and goggles while doing heavy yard work to help avoid injuries.

Take cover in a storm
The largest number of lightning-related injuries take place during the summer months. That’s because we spend more time outdoors, and thunderstorms are more common during warmer weather. Seek shelter if you can hear thunder. Lightning can strike from a storm that is more than 25 miles away. Also, avoid water, such as lakes, ponds or swimming pools during a storm. Water, as well as tall metal objects and trees, can attract a lightning strike. However, lightning can strike anywhere – so the best option is to take cover inside.

With planning and a few preventative measures, you and your family can have a safe, fun and relaxing summer!
